If you have ever read any sort of business book, they will tell you that it is essential to have a USP – Unique Selling Proposition.

You would think that it would be difficult to come up with a USP for gutter cleaning and the fact that we do vacuum gutter cleaning is certainly a niche and USP, but the way that most customers will catch onto is ‘Don’t risk a fall, give us a call’.

The safety aspect of our business is a huge USP to our customers.  The fact that we are fully safety trained, insured and use the correct safety equipment is a huge USP for our customers – both residential and commercial.

What does that mean for you if you are considering investing in a Gutter-Vac franchise?

I was talking with one of our franchisees the other day (Mina Moussa, Manningham) and he was telling me what HE was looking for when getting into business and he pointed something out about Gutter-Vac that I thought was good to share with you.

He said that Gutter-Vac appealed to him and ticked boxes on his list and it was because of the safety aspect.  He said that he wanted a business that people needed, but not that everyone could do so he would be getting into a business with a niche or USP.  That was the safety aspect.

Mina said of course anyone could clean their gutters, but the height factor would stop them doing it themselves, but it would also stop a lot of people deciding to open up a gutter cleaning business.  He could also see that with all the safety training and specialised equipment that Gutter-Vac had, it would be a niche in the business that he could easily market and gain business from.

And guess what?  Mina is right.  It is a USP/Niche.  A lot of people are afraid of heights, but at the same time, with Gutter-Vac, if you are OK with working at heights and use our safety equipment and training to ensure you do so safely, that is not something everyone would do.

We have exhibited a few times at the Franchising Expo and the working at heights is a real initial qualifier for the Gutter-Vac business.  If someone was not OK with working at heights, they would smile at us and say ‘I’m afraid of heights!’ and we would have a joke with them and say ‘Well, probably not the business for you.’

BUT…. If you are OK with heights, then it is not just deciding if this is a good business for you, it has also unlocked a USP for your future business.

If Gutter-Vac turns out not to be the business for you, make sure you look for what is the USP in the business of whatever business you are looking at… it makes a huge difference in the future of your business.
